Life goes on...

I have found that the best way to get some relief from my sadness is to fill my time with work. Thank God, I've had several clients—old and new—coming to me for projects recently. Logos and salon service menus have been the name of the game. See my website for a few new logos!

And to pick up from where I left off last year ...
Before the tragedy of losing my daughter occurred, I was working on creating a website for Kindle & Boom Salon—definitely one of the most beautiful, modern salons around (with the most genuine and personable staff too). Their site is unique in that it is mostly image-based (instead of being created from tables or with Flash). They asked me to create jpegs that they could upload to the website themselves and add in their own links. Take a look!

And speaking of websites, I'm planning on redoing my own sometime soon. It needs less scrolling and less reliance on the "back" button. It also needs a lot more examples of my current work! My husband and I are traveling to Mexico in February to get away from our grief for a week, and once I get back I'll get to work on the site. Exciting!

An Update

As some of you know, and many of you don't—as I never updated here that I was even pregnant —I lost my daughter, Grace Evangeline Young, in my 38th week of pregnancy on November 4, 2008. She died in the night while I was sleeping, due to her umbilical cord wrapping around her body and cutting off her oxygen supply. I will never quite understand why *I* had to go through such a tragedy, but I do know that God's will is perfect, and his design for my life is beautiful.

It has been more difficult than I could ever express in words these past few months, and on some days, it seems like this happened only yesterday.

But I will continue to search God's plan for my life, and give Him all the praise I can muster.

Here is the eulogy my husband, Jeffrey, wrote only 24 hours after Grace was born.

On Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at 11:40am, Grace Evangeline Young was born. Her umbilical cord was wrapped three times around her leg cutting off oxygen to the rest of her body—causing her heart to stop beating. Heather felt her regular playful kicks all Sunday evening. On Monday morning, Heather went through her regular routine of preparing breakfast for them and stopping to tell Grace that she loved her. That morning, Grace did not respond with her usual kick. We had our scheduled doctor visit that morning and they couldn't find Grace's heartbeat or see it fluttering on the ultrasound. Grace was induced at the hospital and delivered 24 hours later.

It is imperative to us that you all know Grace. Grace came to us 2 weeks early as a seven pound baby, twenty-one inches long. She had her mother's feet, already measuring over three inches and primed to play piano with her toes. Her hands are long and angelic, like her mother's. She has her father's large bottom lip and meaty earlobes. She has long thick locks of blond hair. She is adorable. The most perfect baby you have ever seen. In the womb, Grace loved music. As soon it came on, her rump would instantly start moving to the beat. Completely opposite her daddy, Grace has rhythm. She loved going into church and hearing the worship music. Like her dad, Grace is a morning person; she woke her mother up every morning. Grace is very active, she was active very early. Heather felt her kicking at just sixteen weeks. She is more beautiful than we could have ever imagined.

Right now, everything reminds us of Grace. We are doing our very best to welcome it. We want to remember everything about her. We are desperately trying not to be consumed by the tragedy that so quickly ended her life, but to remember her life and the joy she brought to everyone all nine months of it. We praise God for those nine months with our child! We wanted more time, we wanted to see her smile, we wanted her to stare at us with her big blue eyes, we wanted her to hug us back, we wanted to see her kneel down at her bed and pray to God, we wanted to hear her sing in front of church, we wanted to watch her walk down the aisle at her wedding. We were just given nine months and we are going to cherish and honor every millisecond that we were blessed with.

On November 4th, I saw strength in my wife that could only come from God. With Heather's strong faith and so many people praying for us, she made it through the unimaginable. Heather endured the pains of labor to deliver a child that she knew would not cry when she came outside her womb. Heather held Grace adoringly—telling everyone that her daughter is so adorable, that Grace is perfect. Heather is a mom, which is everything God designed her to be. Her daughter, Grace, LIVES in heaven. Grace's brothers and sisters will understand heaven a lot more easily as the place they will see their Savior and their big sister.

We have received an overwhelming amount of correspondences and massive amounts of prayer. Thank you. It is a blessing to have you all supporting us. Everyone is asking how they can help. There is one thing every one of you can do. You can honor Grace. Honor her by calling and visiting every loved one you have. Hug them, tell them that you love them. Life is so fragile. We let it slip by every day—taking it for granted. Grace has brought so much joy into our lives, recognize the joy in yours.

As this is a blog about design, I have to also mention God's creativity when He chose where Grace would be laid to rest. My parents decided that Grace would be buried on their farm, and so on the evening when they went out to search for the perfect spot, a rainbow appeared over the most gorgeous part of their fields. They knew without a doubt that this spot was where God wanted us to place her body.

On Fonts--Make or Break Your Design!

I know that some folks cannot afford a designer, or prefer to make their own marketing materials in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint or some other everyday program. That's OK. But, if you are one of these people, let me give you one piece of advice: do not use the following fonts. They're the telltale sign of a non-designer/rookie/newbie/person-with-no-taste. And they won't win you any points with customers either--they may just
lose you a few or scare potential clients away. This is of utmost importance if you are a salon and spa owner. As a business that sells beauty, creativity, fashion, trends and of course, design, you must stray far from many of the fonts that came installed on your computer. The following fonts are the worst that you can use, for they are as cliched as they come:
Now that you've wiped them off your computer's hard drive, here are a few good replacements:

1.
Myriad Pro: I use it as my backup any time a client does not already have a readable font for long chunks of text. Also, all of my personal promotional postcards use Myriad Pro for lists and paragraphs.

2.
Swiss 721: A great modern alternative to Arial, shown here on one of my recent Valentine's Day Promos.

3.
Feel Script: A Veer exclusive, this font is unique and on top of 2008 trends. I just bought it as a birthday present for myself!

4.
Hellenic Wide: Ooh, I'm in love with this one. Recently used (I think!) by Whole Foods' talented design team in their holiday promotional flyers and banners, this awesome font shows pizazz without even trying. (image from Veer)

5. Bouer Bodoni: Why use Times when you can be chic and classic with this much more clever serif font? Beautiful. (image from Veer)

the secrets to successful Spring Salon Marketing!

I know, it's only January and you've just finished recovering from Christmas, and you're scrambling to get Valentine's Day up and running. Because of the winter holiday rush, Spring somehow becomes the most underrated and forgotten marketing season. From what I've learned over the years working with my salon clients, though, is that Spring holds the most opportunities to attract new clients, increase retail sales and up the overall number of appointments made.

So, get out your to-do lists and add some of the following steps--and watch your salon have a growth spurt!

Mother's Day: Every mom--especially those with young kids at home--deserve pampering. Period. And husbands need hints. This is the holiday to 1. heavily advertise for gift cards in the newspaper, online, and local publications that men pick up and 2. give away free stuff. How about handing out mums (the flowers) on mother's day? Or a box of chocolates? Or better yet--in the weeks before Mother's Day, have every client enter a mother they know into a drawing for a high-value gift card. Market it with big signs and counter cards all over the salon.

Easter & Early Summer: Retail is the name of the game. Whether you're promoting shampoo as a basket-filler, or you're advertising deep conditioners as your "Get Fresh" spring campaign, don't forget a retail promotion this spring. Overwhelmingly successful time and again is the "Buy Two, Get One Free" deal. Make sure you're offering your BEST products with the deal. That means no "free hairbrush" or "free travel samples"--because your clients know when they're being duped! They want the best, so be sure to give it to them.

Wedding Season: This is a big one! Start thinking about it now. If you offer bridal party hairstyling and makeup, consider creating a special bridal services menu. Make it even more high quality than your basic salon services menu, and your brides will know you mean business. This is also when you should think about buying high-budget advertisements in the bigger magazines and newspapers. If there's a bridal edition/issue/insert in the local publications, make sure you know about them in advance! Brides must see your branding everywhere before they think you're a legitimate choice for their big day.

Prom & Graduation: They're the next generation to spend money in your salon, so it's best to lure teens in now! Their moms may not let them get elaborate highlights and edgy haircuts, but prom & graduation may be the first time they set foot in a salon. Advertise your prom & graduation services in every single local high school newspaper and yearbook. Consider creating a student discount, or a two-service prom package ("makeup and updo for 30% off") and put this in your ad!

By late summer, you should be selling hair removal, tanning and back-to-school haircuts. But we'll think about that later!
